Celebrating lifelong learning at the learner and staff awards

Adult Learning Lewisham (ALL) proudly celebrated the achievements of its learners at their annual learner and staff awards, recognising inspirational stories of determination, resilience and achievement from across the organisation.

Learners who’ve gained new skills, improved their English and maths, or developed a creative passion came together with friends and family to celebrate their achievements on Thursday 16 July.

A series of learner awards were presented throughout the evening, celebrating not only what learners achieved in the classroom, but also the confidence, personal growth and perseverance they have shown along the way.

The evening highlighted learners’ diverse journeys: some returning to education after many years, others gaining new skills for personal growth or to support independent living. Each story is a reminder that learning can be a catalyst for change, empowerment, and opportunity.

One inspiring story of determination and resilience was that of Juliana Ogbegie, who received a special outstanding achievement award. Juliana began her learning journey in 2013 through family learning English classes before returning in 2019 determined to improve her maths and English skills. Since then, she has achieved GCSE English, progressed through multiple maths qualifications and is now working towards GCSE Maths.

Another learner recognised for her language-learning journey was Caroline Hall, who progressed from complete beginner to confident Spanish speaker. Her tutor highlighted the determination she has shown in overcoming her fear of making mistakes and developing high-quality language skills.

Many awards celebrated learners who have developed new creative skills and uncovered talents they may never have realised they had.

Glass artist Anuradha Cook received an award for overcoming barriers after continuing her studies despite personal challenges. Her passion for learning and commitment to developing her craft have led to her contributing work to a major summer exhibition.

The awards also recognised the power of learning communities and the positive impact they have on wellbeing, confidence and social connection.

Two Spanish intermediate classes received class of the year recognition for building supportive learning communities. Their enthusiasm, camaraderie and positive approach have created inspiring environments that extend well beyond the classroom.

The event also recognised the dedication and commitment of adult learning staff. Teaching and support staff were acknowledged through awards and commendations for the invaluable role they play in helping learners succeed.
