Aromatherapy and massage for beginners
Explore the complementary arts of aromatherapy and massage in this four-week course. Massage and aromatherapy are both excellent ways to promote relaxation and wellbeing. Your tutor will teach you some effective massage techniques for relieving tension and minor aches and pains, as well as how to give a full body massage. You’ll also learn to use essential oils safely, and understand their effects.

How to enrol
After you’ve chosen which course you want to do, you need to enrol. You should enrol before the course starts to make sure you get a place.
You can enrol up to three weeks after the start date if there are spaces available.

You can also enrol in person at any one of our adult learning centres.
We can only accept debit or credit card payments.
Requirements
If this is your first enrolment you’ll need to provide proof of identity. We will accept a photo of one of the following:
- passport
- driving licence
- national ID card
- birth or adoption certificate
- National Insurance card
- credit or debit card
- recent utility bills or bank statements
- Freedom Pass
How to enrol if you get reduced fees
Find out whether you’re entitled to reduced fees when paying for your course.
If you’re entitled to reduced fees, you can enrol online, but you’ll need to pay for the course then claim a partial refund – you can do so by sending copies of any benefits you’ve claimed in the last three months to adultlearning@lewisham.gov.uk.

Learning aims
- Learn how to give a full body massage safely.
- Learn basic massage techniques.
- Understand the main properties of at least five oils.
- Learn how to use aromatherapy oils safely and gain good general knowledge about how aromatherapy works.
What prior knowledge do I need
This course is suitable for beginners.
What teaching methods
The tutor will use a range of teaching methods including demonstration, discussions, group activities, presentations and practical tasks with feedback.
What assessment methods
The tutor will use various ways to assess your progress, including question and answer sessions, observation of practical work, one to one feedback, group discussions, peer assessment and self assessment.
Extra work
Practising between sessions will help you consolidate what you've learned in the classroom. You'll also need to build up your own collection of aromatherapy carrier oils for home use.
Materials needed
Carrier oils are provided, but if you have specific allergies, you may need to bring one that's suitable for you.
What to bring
Please bring a notebook and pen, two large towels and a small bowl for mixing. If you're allergic to sweet almond oil, please bring a suitable carrier oil too.
After completion
The department offers a wide variety of wellbeing courses. Information about these is available through the tutor, the curriculum leader or the ALL programme.
