This two-session workshop is an ideal complement to existing Clothesmaking courses, and is designed to enable you to get the most out of using an overlocker and achieve a professional finish to your garments. You will learn the correct way to thread up the machine & how to adjust the tension, as well as sampling various techniques including roll hemming, gathering and mock flat-locking

Sewing for complete beginners- essential sewing machine skills & make a pouch bag
If you would love to be able to sew well, but have never learned to do it before, then this short & very friendly course is for you! Learn to use a sewing machine confidently- from correct threading & tension adjustment, to producing a range of stitches & the use of different machine feet. You will practice and make a range of samples, and will then apply your new skills to make a gorgeous zipped purse/pouch style bag. These starter skills will enable you to feel confident to begin a home sewing project or join a new course at ALL

Complete your first sewing project- beginners workshop
If you would love to be able to sew well, but have never learned to do it before, then this short & friendly course is for you! Learn to use a sewing machine confidently- from correct threading & tension adjustment, to producing a range of stitches & the use of different machine feet. You will make a range of reference samples, including seams, hems, zip insertion & buttonholes to enable you to apply your new skills to your home sewing projects or a new course at ALL. You will also have the option to make a simple craft item such as a cushion with a zip or button fastening, a soft fabric shopping bag or a zipped cosmetics/toiletries bag.

How to enrol
After you’ve chosen which course you want to do, you need to enrol. You should enrol before the course starts to make sure you get a place.
You can enrol up to three weeks after the start date if there are spaces available.

Requirements
If this is your first enrolment you’ll need to provide proof of identity. We will accept a photo of one of the following:
- passport
- driving licence
- national ID card
- birth or adoption certificate
- National Insurance card
- credit or debit card
- recent utility bills or bank statements
- Freedom Pass
How to enrol if you get reduced fees
Find out whether you’re entitled to reduced fees when paying for your course.
If you’re entitled to reduced fees, you can enrol online, but you’ll need to pay for the course then claim a partial refund – you can do so by sending copies of any benefits you’ve claimed in the last three months to adultlearning@lewisham.gov.uk.

Learning aims
- To understand the main functions of an overlocker machine
- To complete a range of samples of techniques to a good standard.
- To use the overlocker correctly and safely.
- To identify how to put new techniques into practice for future projects.
What prior knowledge do I need
This course is designed for learners who already have at least a basic understanding of practical garment making. It is not suitable for complete beginners to sewing and you must be able to use a standard sewing machine confidently.
What teaching methods
The tutor will use a range of teaching methods during the course which will include the following: Demonstration - both group and individual, one to one tuition, group work, assessment of progress, observation, discussion / question and answer sessions.
What assessment methods
The course tutor will use a range of methods to assess progress on the course. These may include: Observation, completion of an Individual Learning Plan which will be updated regularly, evaluation of work samples, question and answer sessions.
Extra work
No additional work outside of class is required.
Materials needed
All the basic materials you will use will be provided.
What to bring
A notebook & pen, plus a wallet or folder for your samples/handouts would be useful. Your phone/camera will also be useful for recording ideas and techniques.
After completion
The department offers a wide variety of fashion and textile courses at different levels. Information about additional or progression courses is available through the tutor, the Curriculum Leader or the current ALL programme on our website. There are also a range of courses at a higher level offered across London and the South East by Colleges, Community & Adult Education providers and through local craftspeople.

- To use a range of equipment & materials correctly and safely.
- To gain confidence to use a sewing machine independently
What prior knowledge do I need
This course is aimed at complete beginners to sewing & no prior knowledge or experience is needed. Learners with very rusty or long forgotten skills may also wish to join it as a refresher course! Maths using addition, subtraction and multiplication are required on this course in order to make calculations for a variety of projects. English reading skills are essential to be able to interpret patterns and follow technical instructions. Leaners are, therefore, expected to have at least Entry Level standard in Maths and English. Before enrolling, please contact the curriculum leader if you have any concerns regarding the suitability of the course for you.

If you have any of your own basic sewing kit items such as dressmaking pins, tape measure, fabric cutting out scissors & stitch unpickers, please bring these along- otherwise you will be able to use the equipment we have in class

Please bring along your basic sewing kit (if you have it), a pen, pencil, notebook and a small folder or wallet could be useful for storing samples and notes. A phone/camera would also be useful to record any ideas & techniques demonstrations.

Materials needed
You will need to bring a Basic Sewing Kit to include dressmaking pins, needles, tape measure, fabric cutting out scissors, threads ( if you are buying these items from scratch they will cost approximately £20-25). You will also need a small quantity of soft furnishing weight fabric and trimmings to make the craft item of your choice- and your tutor will advise you on this once the class is underway. Please do not purchase anything new until you know that the course will definitely run.
