Pottery – Monday to Tuesday – throwing intensive – winter
This two-day intensive pottery throwing course is suitable for all experience levels, from beginners to more experienced makers. Led by an expert tutor, and with a small group size of just 8 learners, you will receive focused guidance throughout. You will be introduced to essential techniques including clay preparation, centering, and throwing basic forms such as cylinders and bowls. Those with prior experience will also benefit from personalised support to help refine and develop their skills further.

How to enrol
After you’ve chosen which course you want to do, you need to enrol. You should enrol before the course starts to make sure you get a place.
You can enrol up to three weeks after the start date if there are spaces available.

Requirements
If this is your first enrolment you’ll need to provide proof of identity. We will accept a photo of one of the following:
- passport
- driving licence
- national ID card
- birth or adoption certificate
- National Insurance card
- credit or debit card
- recent utility bills or bank statements
- Freedom Pass

If you’re entitled to reduced fees, you can enrol online, but you’ll need to pay for the course then claim a partial refund – you can do so by sending copies of any benefits you’ve claimed in the last three months to adultlearning@lewisham.gov.uk.

Learning aims
- Develop the confidence to throw cylinders and bowls.
- Complete a minimum of one thrown pot for firing.
What prior knowledge do I need
No prior knowledge or experience is required to enrol on this course.
What teaching methods
The tutor will use a range of teaching methods during the course, including demonstration (both group and individual), one to one tuition, group work, progress assessments, observation, discussion and question and answer sessions.
What assessment methods
The tutor will use a range of methods to assess your progress during the course. These may include observation, evaluation of work samples and question and answer sessions.
Extra work
The tutor will discuss this with you in your first session.
Materials needed
The course fee includes a small charge for basic pottery materials. Most of the equipment you'll need is provided by the pottery studio. You may be asked to provide additional materials that may not be covered by the fee. The tutor will discuss this with you. Please do not purchase anything before your first session unless requested to do so. No liability can be accepted for expenses incurred for a course cancelled or altered at short notice.
What to bring
All basic materials are provided. This is a practical subject, so please wear suitable clothing including flat, closed toe, non slip shoes. A notebook and pen may be useful.
After completion
The department offers a wide variety of art, pottery and performing arts courses. Information about these courses is available through the tutor, the curriculum leader or the ALL programme.
