This two-week course will introduce you to the Fair Isle knitting technique, giving you the skills to create colourful patterns using two or more colours of yarn. You will also learn how to knit in the round using long circular needles. Put your new skills into practice as you work towards making a festive Christmas bag or bauble, creating a lovely handmade decoration or a thoughtful gift for someone special.

Knitting socks in the round
Discover the joy of knitting your very own socks in this fun, hands-on two-week course! Build on your existing knitting skills as you learn to knit in the round using circular or double-pointed needles. You’ll explore the art of top-down sock construction, master a stretchy cast-on, learn the secrets of turning a heel and shaping a toe, and bring your sock to life stitch by stitch. Whether you’re looking to expand your knitting skills or take on an exciting new project, you’ll gain the knowledge and confidence to continue your sock-knitting journey at home.

How to enrol
After you’ve chosen which course you want to do, you need to enrol. You should enrol before the course starts to make sure you get a place.
You can enrol up to three weeks after the start date if there are spaces available.

Requirements
If this is your first enrolment you’ll need to provide proof of identity. We will accept a photo of one of the following:
- passport
- driving licence
- national ID card
- birth or adoption certificate
- National Insurance card
- credit or debit card
- recent utility bills or bank statements
- Freedom Pass
How to enrol if you get reduced fees
Find out whether you’re entitled to reduced fees when paying for your course.
If you’re entitled to reduced fees, you can enrol online, but you’ll need to pay for the course then claim a partial refund – you can do so by sending copies of any benefits you’ve claimed in the last three months to adultlearning@lewisham.gov.uk.

What prior knowledge do I need
This course is suitable for learners who are comfortable with basic knitting skills such as casting on and the knit stitch. No prior knowledge of fair isle is necessary.
What teaching methods
The tutor will use a range of teaching methods during the course which will include the following: Demonstration - both group and individual, one to one tuition, group work, assessment of progress, observation, discussion / question and answer sessions.
What assessment methods
The course tutor will use a range of methods to assess progress on the course. These may include Observation, completion of an Individual Learning Plan which will be updated regularly, evaluation of work samples, question and answer sessions.
Extra work
Homework is encouraged- extra work is not essential but will enable learners to practice techniques and progress their projects at a faster pace.
Materials needed
We recommend bringing 4mm needles and double knitting yarn for your project. However, you could also use 3mm needles and 4ply yarn if you wish. Pure wool works particularly well for fair isle projects although you could also use other fibres such as cotton or acrylic if preferred.
What to bring
As above, so that you can get started on your project in the first session.
After completion
The department offers a wide variety of fashion and textile courses at different levels. Information about progression courses is available through the tutor, the Curriculum Leader or the online Adult Learning Lewisham programme. There are also a range of courses at a higher level offered across London and the South East by Colleges, Community and Adult Education providers and through local craftspeople. For more information about higher level courses currently available, please speak to your tutor or the Curriculum Leader.

Learning aims

- Learn the techniques required to knit a top-down sock, including heel turning and toe shaping
What prior knowledge do I need
This course is suitable for learners who have the knitting basics and are already able to cast on and confidently do the knit and purl stitch. No prior experience of knitting in the round is necessary.
What teaching methods
The tutor will use a range of teaching methods during the course which will include the following: Demonstration - both group and individual, one to one tuition, group work, assessment of progress, observation, discussion / question and answer sessions.
What assessment methods
The course tutor will use a range of methods to assess progress on the course. These may include Observation, completion of an Individual Learning Plan which will be updated regularly, evaluation of work samples, question and answer sessions.

Materials needed
A pattern will be provided to make a pair of double-knit socks. You will need to bring 150 grams of double-knit weight yarn and 3.25mm circular knitting needles that are 80-100cm long OR a set of 3.25mm double pointed knitting needles.

Alternatively, if you would like to bring your own pattern or an existing sock project that you need help completing that is also welcomed.
