Our braille courses are designed for adults who are blind or visually impaired, offering a supportive environment to learn and gain confidence in reading and writing braille. Courses promote independence, effective communication, and provide opportunities to connect with others who share similar experiences.

Becoming an independent reader and writer is a transition course designed for visually impaired learners who wish to continue their studies in other areas. Courses focus on building essential skills for greater independence in everyday life, including hands-on experience with assistive technologies such as screen readers and audio-based programmes.
How to enrol
To enrol on a Physical and sensory impairments course you need to complete a pre-course assessment (PCA). At the pre-course assessment we will assess your skills level and needs and recommend the right course for you.
Pre-course assessments for new learners
Pre-course assessments for new learners take place between 14–30 July and more dates starting 15–16 September.
You can book a pre-course assessment by calling 020 8314 3300, Monday to Friday from 10am-4pm.

What happens at a pre-course assessment
As part of the assessment, you will need to:
- provide evidence of your identity
- bring evidence of any benefits claimed in the last three months or a bank statement or wage slip if you are on a low income, and are applying for reduced fees
- pay your course fees (where applicable) and complete your enrolment
