This course will develop functional skills in literacy, ICT and maths, to support independent living, and to develop communication skills and confidence to progress in your study and/or work.
This workshop-style class, delivered at Heather Close, is focused on developing functional and practical skills, while supporting learners working at various levels, and catering for individual’s needs. Learners will take part in a skills assessment and in a supportive environment, can share with the tutor their aspirations and needs to prepare for progression when they leave the unit.

Preparing for accredited learning – Entry 3 to Level 1
This course is designed for adults living with and recovering from mental health conditions and learners with mild learning difficulties. It offers a supportive and inclusive environment where you will build a portfolio of work as you build your confidence, improve literacy and numeracy-related language skills, and prepare for progression into further or accredited learning.
You will work independently and collaboratively to develop your speaking, listening, reading, writing, and problem-solving skills at Entry 3 and Level 1. Assessment is carried out in a supportive way to identify your starting point and celebrate progress.
In term 1, the focus is on developing your confidence, resilience, communication, and core literacy skills with activities designed to encourage participation and self-expression. Activities will include you practising spelling, punctuation, grammar, and structuring work clearly and you will begin to identify the purpose of different texts including those that use data. You will practise reading for understanding using current and relevant themes. Group discussions, debates, and presentations will help you develop confidence when sharing ideas and working with others. By the end of term, you will be more able to learn independently, have established positive learning habits and increased the pace you work.

Pre-course assessments
To enrol on a supported learning or Mindlift course you need to complete a pre-course assessment (PCA). At the pre-course assessment we will assess your skills level and needs and recommend the right course for you.

What happens at a pre-course assessment
As part of the assessment, you will need to:
- provide evidence of your identity
- bring evidence of any benefits claimed in the last three months or a bank statement or wage slip if you are on a low income, and are applying for reduced fees
- pay your course fees (where applicable) and complete your enrolment

What prior knowledge do I need
This class is open to all residents at Heather Close. The learners will have an initial reading, writing and speaking/listening assessment. If learners wish to develop their IT skills, then they will have an initial IT assessment. If the learners wish to develop their numeracy skills, then they will have an initial numeracy assessment.
What teaching methods
Within this small supportive class, your tutor may use the following teaching methods that will be inclusive for all abilities and levels, so that all learners make good progress towards their goals: demonstrations, discussions, 1:1 support and practical group activities.
What assessment methods
Assessment may include: informal question and answer, feedback, self-assessment, quizzes, games, portfolios and case studies.
Extra work
It will be beneficial for you to practise what you have learnt in class in your everyday life and you may be asked by your tutor to complete something specific to enhance your new skills and improve your confidence.
Materials needed
An A4 writing pad, pens, pencils, a ruler and an A4 file will be useful.

The learners are based in a residential unit and potential progression routes are available for all the learners. Appropriate routes will first be discussed with Heather Close staff.

Learning aims
- Contribute verbally in at least one group discussion or class activity each session, demonstrating improved confidence in speaking and listening skills.
- Produce at least two pieces of structured writing showing improvement in spelling, punctuation, grammar, and sentence structure, measured against your initial assessment.
- Identify the purpose and main points of at least three different types of texts, including one data-related text, with support where needed.
What prior knowledge do I need
You will need to be working at a solid E2 in reading and writing and E1 in maths. You must have an interest and desire to progress to education or employment.

After completion
On completion of all three parts of this course, you may be able to progress onto a suitable mainstream accredited maths or English course, or continue with a variety of different courses available in the Mindlift department. Information about these courses is available on the website and through your tutor and curriculum leader. You can also apply to mainstream courses and have support from Mindlift.
