Life drawing and portraiture

This 4 week dynamic course will teach you how to draw the human figure from observation while encouraging creative exploration. Through weekly projects, you will investigate line, tone, form, movement, colour, and composition using both traditional and experimental approaches. Working from long and short poses, you’ll experiment with a variety of media. Emphasis will be placed on pushing boundaries—exploring unconventional mark-making, layering, and expressive interpretation. You will be supported to develop your own ideas and personal style, creating work that is both observational and imaginative.

You will work with long and short poses using various media including paint, charcoal, pen and ink. You will be encouraged to explore and develop your own ideas.

In this 2-hour taster session, you’ll explore drawing the human figure from observation while experimenting with expressive techniques. The session encourages playful mark-making and creative interpretation, helping you loosen up and develop your own style.

Working from a live model, learners will be guided through exercises that explore proportion, gesture, and composition, with an emphasis on creating expressive and narrative-driven drawings. Drawing inspiration from classical and contemporary myths, participants will experiment with pose, character, and atmosphere, considering how storytelling can inform the way the human figure is represented.
Tutor-led demonstrations and individual guidance will support learners in exploring mark-making, tone, and movement, helping to bring energy and drama into their work. All materials and the cost of the model are included in the course fee.
