Cinema: Time, Memory, Dreams

What is Cinema? All Cinema is the manipulation of Time and Space.
This course will explore what makes Cinema different from all other art forms; its ability to skate back and forth across time and use camera, sets, locations, sound and editing to create distinctive worlds which may be realist, fantasy or experimental.
Though making cinema is precise and technical the results for the audience can hide the expertise to create these fluid imaginative worlds which audiences enter in darkened cinemas or even on a phone with earbuds in a crowded train.
We will explore how, since the beginning of cinema, our experiences of the medium and the subjects and style of film makers explore time, memory and dreams, studying these ideas through a selection from films like the early Cinema fantasy films of George Melies, The Doll by Ernst Lubitsch, the 20s and 30s. surrealism of Germaine Dulac’s Seashell and the Clergyman together with Man Ray and Cocteau’s films. We will also look at films like Jean Vigo’s mesmeric L’Atalante, Classic 40s Hollywood Noir world of Preminger’s Laura, Arthur Penn’s 1965 neo noir Mickey One or the work of Hitchcock. There will also be experimental work like Maya Deren’s 1940s films or Mikhael Kalatozov’s 1964 Soy Cuba.
We will explore the diversity and expressive manipulation of film form to create the cinematic experiences of Time, Memory and Dreams for audiences across the world.

Learning aims
- To analyse how film makers explore Time, Memory and Dreams as subjects of their films.

- To develop ideas about how we as audiences experience Cinema.
What prior knowledge do I need
No prior knowledge or experience is necessary to enrol on this course although a love of film is essential. The course will accommodate people who are just starting to study film as well as those with experience and academic qualifications. Please be advised that some learners who enrol will have more experience than others.
A basic level of English, Maths and computer skills would be useful.
What teaching methods
The tutor will use a range of teaching methods during the course including teaching notes and articles, tutor presentations, screenings, discussion/question and answer sessions.
What assessment methods
The tutor will use various methods to assess your progress during the course. These may include observation, completion of an Individual Learning Plan which will be updated regularly, question and answer sessions and discussion.
Extra work
Recommendations will be provided enabling you to follow up class sessions with further screenings at the cinema, on TV and online. Local cinemas like The Deptford Cinema, Sands Films, The Catford Mews, Curzon Goldsmiths and the bfi southbank are recommended as well online resources like MUBI to enjoy alternatives to mainstream programming.

Please complete the ‘Get to know you’ section of the Individual Learning Plan after the first lesson. The Individual Learning Plan will require regular updates during the course with the support of the tutor.
After completion
The department offers a wide variety of design, media, music and food courses at different levels. Information about these courses is available through the tutor, the curriculum leader or the ALL programme. You could also progress to Higher Education film courses at Goldsmiths, The University of the Arts, South Bank University and others. The tutor will be happy to help with this.
